The email audience
The email audience
Your marketing email goes out from one Mailchimp audience (set in Mocca Settings). Mocca keeps that audience and the consent flags in step.
The rules
| What happens | Result |
|---|---|
| Someone unsubscribes in Mailchimp, or Mailchimp cleans an address (bounces) | The Contact gets Unsubscribed ticked and Marketing Opt-in cleared. Mailchimp always wins on an opt-out. |
| Someone subscribes in Mailchimp | Marketing Opt-in is ticked with source mailchimp, unless the Contact is unsubscribed |
| A Contact is unsubscribed in Mocca (ticked by staff, or by another vendor) | That night Mocca unsubscribes the member in Mailchimp. Opt-outs flow both ways. |
| A Contact is opted in and not unsubscribed | That night Mocca adds them to the audience as subscribed, with first and last name. A member already in the audience only gets their name updated. |
| A member is pending, transactional or archived in Mailchimp | The Contact is linked (its Mailchimp ID is set) and its flags are left alone |
Mocca never re-subscribes someone who unsubscribed or was cleaned in Mailchimp, even if their Contact is opted in. If Mailchimp refuses to add an address (invalid, or blocked for compliance reasons), Mocca writes a Mailchimp push failed entry in the Error Log and does not try that contact again.
Suppressions
Before anything else, when Mailchimp is first connected, an administrator runs a one-off suppression import: Mocca reads every member of the audience, links each one to its Contact (creating Contacts for addresses it did not know) and applies the rules above, so every unsubscribed or cleaned member becomes an unsubscribed Contact. Only after that does the nightly sync start, so an old unsubscribe can never be overwritten by a newer opt-in from another system.
When it runs
- Instantly, when Mailchimp’s webhook reports a change.
- Every night, the reconcile compares the audience with the Contacts, applies opt-outs both ways, then adds opted-in Contacts that are new or changed.
To try the sync without changing the audience, use Read Only on the Mailchimp tab; see Mailchimp.
