Consent flags

Consent flags

Four fields on a Contact decide whether the person may receive marketing.

Field Where Meaning
Unsubscribed Details tab (Frappe’s own field) The person said no. This is the only opt-out in Mocca, and it always wins.
Marketing Opt-in Mocca tab The person explicitly agreed to marketing email
SMS Opt-in Mocca tab The person explicitly agreed to marketing text messages
Opt-in Source Mocca tab Which system recorded the opt-in, for example Eventbrite or mailchimp
  • Unsubscribed ticked: never send marketing, whatever the other flags say.
  • Unsubscribed clear, Marketing Opt-in ticked: the person may receive marketing email.
  • Both clear: the person has not opted in, or was never asked. That is not the same as saying no: a later explicit opt-in can still turn Marketing Opt-in on.

Mostly the syncs:

  • An opt-in is only recorded from explicit consent in a vendor: the opt-in question on an Eventbrite checkout, or a subscribe in Mailchimp. Mocca then sets Marketing Opt-in and records the vendor in Opt-in Source, and only if the contact is not unsubscribed.
  • An unsubscribe in Mailchimp sets Unsubscribed and clears Marketing Opt-in.
  • When a vendor reports that the person withdrew consent, Mocca clears an opt-in that vendor granted. An opt-in another vendor recorded stays.
  • A purchase without a consent answer changes nothing.

Staff with write access to contacts (Sales User and above) can also change the flags by hand, in the Desk or in the CRM if your administrator added them to the side panel:

  • To record that someone asked to stop marketing (by phone, at the desk, by email), tick Unsubscribed. Do not just clear Marketing Opt-in: only Unsubscribed is an opt-out, and only Unsubscribed reaches Mailchimp.
  • Only tick Marketing Opt-in when you have the person’s explicit agreement, and write where it came from in Opt-in Source.

When two contacts are merged, an unsubscribe on either one carries over, and a merge never turns an opt-in on. See Merging duplicates.

Marketing email is sent from Mailchimp. As a backstop, if someone sends bulk email from Frappe to an Email Group, Mocca removes every recipient whose Contact is unsubscribed before it goes out. Password resets, notifications and ticket replies are not affected.
